FGAF! The Origin Story

FGAF! was inspired by this amazing light at Hatchet Hall in Culver City. Check it out...the food and the decor is great. Get the cornbread.

Back in February of this year, I had been contemplating my little alter ego, FGAF! and I felt her coming out of her shell, yelling, "I"m here! Stop trying to contain me," when she finally showed her face in the lighting at one of our favorite restaurants in LA. I was sitting with my sweet Carlo (the love of my life) and having some perfectly crusty on the outside, moist on the inside, cornbread from the famous Hatchet Hall in Culver City, when I looked up to greet my new best friend. She was hanging there, so innocently, looking at me with doe eyes and beckoning me to turn her into something she could be proud of. I stopped mid-sentence and exclaimed, "There she is!" and much to my chagrin Carlo nodded in agreement. You see, he's a great judge of character and that's one of the many reasons I love him.

I snapped a picture of the light and later that night and into the next morning, I crafted the sparky and snarky FGAF you see today. She has had many iterations since then but she always keeps her pizzaz and her fire for life and feminism. Through her eyes I've been able to regain a spark of activism that I'd felt slipping away from me due to the exhaustion this government has put upon me (and everyone who is paying attention or gives a shit ton of bricks about human rights) and maintain a playful, yet serious in content focus on moving women forward and just as importantly not allowing them to forget how we even got here in the first place (in a position where we can speak our minds, vote for those who we believe will serve our interests as women, own property, divorce our husbands, protect our bodies from oppression, etc.). It seems as if many women are experiencing what the Greek philosophers called Akrasia (a weakness of will, when people do the opposite of what is good for them) and are buying into all sorts of rubbish that will prevent them and their children from having the opportunity to make choices about their independent lives like we are able to today. It's almost like they think these rights just fell out of the trees. One of the things all of us can do (because of feminism) is go to Hatchet Hall in Culver City with our girlfriends, grab a cocktail, dress however we want to, and have a fucking awesome night! Cheers to feminism and Cheers to FGAF! This is just the beginning.

Since her birth I have figured out what her mission is. She aims to save you from yourself (if you need it) or educate, inspire, celebrate, and remind you of how amazing you already are and everything you can do if you feel like it (because feminism is about opportunity and the ability to make your own choices). And to anyone who wants to drag us backwards, I just have one word for you...

--FGAF! (say it!)
